NEW: Six Months Of Continuous Heartworm Protection Did you know that only 51% of pet owners successfully follow their veterinarian's recommended heartworm regimen, and that missed doses of monthly preventives put your dog at risk for heartworm disease? ProHeart 6 is now available to give your best friend extended protection from heartworm disease. A single injection of ProHeart 6 protects your dog from heartworm infection continuously for 6 months. Ask us if ProHeart 6 is right for your dog! New: Test Your Pet for Heart Disease Heart disease is surprisingly common in dogs and cats. Up to 15% of younger dogs have heart disease, and that rate increases to above 60% as dogs age. Nearly 2 out of 10 cats have heart disease. Heart disease can be due to leaky valves leading to congestive heart failure or due to cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease). Pets with cardiomyopathy may die suddenly without prior symptoms and with normal prior exams. Cardiomyopathy is seen in Doberman Pinschers, Boxers, Spaniels, and in cats. A new blood test, Cardiopet proBNP, measures a “prohormone” released as heart muscle stretches due to congestive heart failure or cardiomyopathy. This new test enables veterinarians to detect heart disease and track its progression in order to determine the appropriate course of action. If you have a cat or at-risk breed of dog, consider screening your pet with this test. International Travel If you are traveling internationally with your pet, plan well in advance of your anticipated travel date. Many countries have specific requirements that need to be fulfilled well ahead of travel. Contact that country’s consulate or website for current import regulations. If required, Dr. Silke Bogart is authorized (accredited) by the USDA to sign inter-national health certificates.
